At its core, the hustler mindset is about making things happen even in the most dire circumstances. They’re a rare breed, the perfect balance between a creative mind and a strong work ethic. Hustlers are ambitious, but they’re realistic in accepting that their goals require hard work, determination, and sacrifice.
To delve deeper into the mind of a hustler, there are a few things you need to know and accept:
Hustlers understand the difference between working hard and working smart. They are blessed with the creativity to think outside the box, so things are done faster and more efficiently. Unlike work mules who spend every day doing tasks that anyone can do, hustlers focus on tasks that differentiate them from others.
Instead of doing lunch runs for everyone in the office, why not call the restaurant and ask them if they can deliver? Rather than spending a lot of money on business ideas that don’t work, why not invest in courses or workshops that help polish those ideas? There are a lot of ways to go about things, very few are smart and effective. Hustlers choose those routes.
If it’s worth a lot, it will cost you a lot. Most people see successful figures and instantly call them lucky because they’re overnight success stories. Well, that “overnight” lasted years and for some, even decades. A hustler endures years of sacrifices before they start reaping the rewards.
Despite working efficiently and smarter than most people, hustlers do not run away from hard work. They understand that to get from where they are now to where they want to be, sacrifices must be made. If that means spending hours on the street playing the accordion and eating fire to realize your circus dream, then so be it. That hustle brought the world Guy Laliberté’s successful show Cirque du Soleil.
Believe the Cause
The reason hustlers have the motivation to work hard and dedicate every ounce of strength they have is due to their belief systems. Faith goes a long way with a hustler. When hustlers have to give up an 8-hours of sleep to close a client, he does it willingly and openly because he’s confident he’s going to get that deal.
This is the same for many successful CEOs, like Bill Gates who left Harvard to pursue a business with his best friend or Do Won Chang who worked three jobs to open his first clothing store that became Forever 21. They hustled because they believed.
Rise Above Excuses
Positivity is what allows a hustler to take the reins a turn a bad situation around. They don’t hide behind excuses. Many successful hustlers come from impoverished and difficult backgrounds. What delineates them from the rest is the drive to rise above it.
Hustlers choose to be the masters of their fate. Even in the darkest of situations, a hustler finds a positive spin that could help him use this moment of weakness or failure to his advantage. Your first start-up failed? Figure out why and use the setback as a learning experience that will make your next business better than the first.
Take a Chance
Courage is really not the absence of fear. It’s the willingness to face it. Hustlers know that no matter how hard they work, there will always be risks. They could work years to build a business and in one recession, it’s gone. That will always be an insecurity. The sooner someone accepts that the more hustle he’s able to do either prevent that from happening or make sure he can come back from it.
One Howard Schultz took the plunge after a trip to Milan. He asked his bosses if they’d like to try selling upscale coffee like people do in Europe. They had no interest in his idea but were persuaded to invest in Schultz. Many years later, almost everyone American drinks Schultz’ Starbucks coffee.
Finding the Hustler In You
Some people are gifted with the hustler gene. Hard work and creativity comes naturally to them, and they’re lucky. However, being a hustler is also an acquired skill. You can strive to be one. All you need is to look back at the distinct mindset that a hustler has and slowly incorporate it into your lifestyle.
You can find ways to streamline how your work, so you’re efficient without putting in more hours. Set goals that you’re passionate about, and work out an actionable plan to achieve it. Seek out the help of other hustlers, and learn from them. Remind yourself of takes risks and think positive. All these will help you become the hustler that you need to be.
